A Starter strip is your first line of defense to keep shingles from blowing off roof.

It is the first layer of shingle material installed over the underlayment. It is important because they are the most vulnerable shingles to wind damage.

Often, starter is made from three tab shingles. Its appeal is it is the cheapest way to go, but is you want the best wind protection, you need to order dedicated starter strip from the factory. It is made specifically for that reason with better adhesion properties.

Many manufacturers make the use of real dedicated starter a requirement in order to qualify for the highest wind rating. It usually required along rake edges too.
Starter strip costs a little more but provide the best protection when the wind comes up, and strengthens the manufacturer’s warranty.
